Baramulla District

Baramulla district is bounded by Kupwara in the north, Budgam and Poonch in the south,parts of Srinagar and Ladakh in the east and Muzaffarabad(Azad Kashmir) in the west.
The district which is named after its headquarters was initially pronounced as VARAHMUL.The district is spread over 4588 Sq.Kms.and its population according to 1991 projections is approx.9 Lakes.Administratively,it is divided into 8 tehsils viz Sopore, Gurez, Bandipore, Sonawari, Pattan, Uri,Tangmarg and Baramulla,14 community development blocks and 162 panchayats, besides about half a dozen towns.
Baramulla is no different from other parts of Kashmir Valley.The food habits,dress pattern, customs and traditions are the same as followed in other parts of the Valley. Kashmiri is the main language of the people in the district.Pahari and Gojari are also spoken in Uri and areas near foot hills of Gulmarg and Bandipore.Sheena (Dardi) is the local language in Gurez and Tilail areas.Urdu is also spoken by people.
Historical Places and Monuments
Bandippore
This town lies on the east bank of Wullar lake and is also called the "Port of Wullar". The roads to Gurez and Gilgit lead from this town. A beautiful park at the pattern of Famous Nishat Bagh exists there.
Pattan
This is an old town and remained capital of Kashmir during Shankervarman regime. It is 26 Kms from Srinagar.
Gulmarg
Fifty seven Kms.from Srinagar,Gulmarg, a meadow of flowers, is a world famous tourist resort situated at an altitude of 2730 meters. Surrounded by dense forests on all sides,Gulmarg is known for natural beauty and is rated as one of the matchless hill resort of the world. Gulmarg is besides its natural charm also famous for golf hikes. It is country's premierwinter sports resort. It is an ideal place for Skiing and Skating. The road from Srinagar to Gulmarg is beautifully lined with towering trees making a majestic drive. Gulmarg Gandola project has installed a number of Gondolas upto Kongdori and this ride is going to be extended upto Khilanmarg.
Manasbal Lake
This small lake is situated at distance of 32 Kms.from Srinagar.Its length is about 5 Kms. and breadth 1.20 Kms. The importance of this lake lies chiefly in its deep and clean waters and lotus flowers.Lotus roots(Nadroo) and water nuts grew in plenty there.
